Featured speaker, David Mas Masumoto is a third-generation farmer growing peaches, nectarines and grapes on an 80-acre farm in Del Rey California.  The author of five books, and a newspaper columnist, he is also a captivating speaker.  His latest book, "Wisdom of the Last Farmer", is the 2011 all-county Stanislaus Reads book.  This book began as a personal journal, but evolved into broader life lessons he wanted to share.

Co-chair Marilyn Dompe emphasizes that the event showcases Central Valley produce and products, much of them donated by local growers and vendors.  "We are pleased to spotlight David Mas Masumoto who has a passion for farming and the story behind the food.  He believes we should all know where our food comes from."

Kathie Cohn, co-chair and a Stanislaus Library Foundation Board Member says the goal is to raise funds and awareness for the Stanislaus County Library.  "This year, as just one of its projects, the Foundation provided $30,000 to ensure the continuation of the 2011 Summer Reading Program which will serve over 10,000 children and teens.  Teachers will tell you that come the start of school, they can always spot the children who read over the summer."

The Stanislaus Library Foundation, organized in 1994, enriches lives in our community by advocating for a vital library, increasing awareness, raising funds and supporting key library programs.  Eighty-seven percent of the library's funding comes from the dedicated 1/8th cent sales tax.  The recession has affected buying power and as a result funds for the library have declined dramatically.  Support your local library by purchasing a ticket to the 2011 Author's Garden Gala.
